Primary

Grades 1 to 5.

Primary teaching from the first grade through Grade 5. Children are expected to work, and they are expected to be known by name. The academy does not run a Grade 6.

Grades 1 and 2

Reading is secured here. Children learn letter sounds, write with a proper grip, and meet numbers with objects before they are asked to trust a written method. The class teacher should know who is still sounding out and who is ready to read alone.

Grades 3 and 4

Pupils move from learning to read toward reading to learn. Writing gets longer. Mathematics takes in larger numbers. Science and social studies ask children to explain what they did, not only to copy a note.

Grade 5

The last primary class at TESMA. The work is serious enough for the next school a family chooses, and it still includes music, creative arts, and conduct. A child should leave able to read, calculate, and give an account of themselves.

Beside the desk

Music and creative arts are skills development for the school, not an optional extra announced after admission. Character — spiritual discipline and how a child treats other people — is part of the same day as classwork.

A primary day

Classwork in the hours the academy is open.

Monday to Friday, 7:10am to 3:30pm. Saturday and Sunday the campus is closed.

  1. Morning work

Literacy and mathematics take the freshest part of the day. Pupils are expected to attempt the work, ask when they are stuck, and correct what was marked.

  2. The wider subjects

Science, social studies, civic learning, arts, music, and physical education fill the rest of the timetable. Practical work is planned into the week.

  3. Home at 3:30pm

TESMA is a day school. Children go home at the end of the school day. Homework, where a class sets it, is short enough to be finished and checked.

Joining a grade

Tell us the class. If you are unsure, say so.

A child coming from Kindergarten 2 on this campus already has a record here. A child joining from another school should bring the last report. Admissions will say whether that grade has a place this term.
